Comfort Foods

November 29, 2005

Kraft Dinner with Bacon Bits.

Fish and Chips with tartar sauce on the fish and malt vinegar and salt on the chips.

Spaghetti with garlic bread, soping up the sauce.

No bake Cherry Cheesecake (the recipe from Philidelphia Cream Cheese).

Chili; baked not stove-top. (my father-in-laws recipe)

Rice pudding with raisins.

Chocolate milk with Zesty Cheese Doritos (a.k.a. Stinky Chips).

These are some of my comfort foods. Some of them are still a comfort to me, although I don’t partake in them very often because the seams on my jeans I *just* got back into after having Troll Baby, they wouldn’t like me very much…

I have a love/hate relationship with food, like most people. There are such good memories, even newer ones, with Big D’s family gatherings, that trigger further memories of how good something tasted over a light conversation with my mother-in-law, her and I trying to resist certain caloric intake after a huge meal. We joke about how we will only have a little sliver…of everything!

I saw an Oprah show once about the French only taking 3 bites of forbidden foods, in order to avoid the deprivation, along with the calories. Coming from a clean-your-plate home, growing up, I find it difficult to do that. I’d rather deprive myself than try to stop at 3 bites and throw something away! ESPECIALLY if it’s Big D’s cool Grandma’s Pecan Pie. Then I’m in trouble from the get-go. They don’t know it, but they would be lucky to have any at all. I have definitely considered shoving that whole pie in the diaper bag for later consumption!

I often wonder what foods will trigger happy memories for my children when they are older. Will it be spaghetti night? It seems to be their favorite thing that I make now. Perhaps it will be Daddy’s Honey Garlic Sausages, served up with mashed potatoes and corn. It’s easier to tell with Little D what are favorites now, then with Troll Baby, who eats everything served to him.

Just last night he ate chicken lasagna, 3 cheese noodles, and chocolate ice cream. It is quite obvious that he is a huge fan of the latter. After running his finger through the chocolate puddle in his bowl and licking his finger about 5 times, he discovered that if he tipped his bowl like a cup, he could drink the heaven sent from the freezer. He did just that, but toddler coordination is akin to very drunk people, and much like a drunk person slops booze on himself, Troll Baby was soon dismayed to find he had missed his mouth and his ice cream was trickling down his chin. His tongue frantically licked downward, his head even tripping forward in an effort to make his tongue longer. He did manage to get some into his tiny mouth, and having had that tiny taste, he went for a second try. Except it was more like a bad Chris Farley skit: he rubbed the bowl all over his head and hands and ended up looking like one of the little rascals, Otay?

What are your comfort foods?

When do you eat them and why?

Do you rub them on your head? C’mon, admit it.
