Housekeeping and Love Thursday: Sous-chef Style

October 26, 2006

Well that’s enough of that sadness I posted the night before last. Gah! Thank you for all your lovely comments. I’ve recovered nicely from the sting of my brain and heart working overtime and been slapped in the face with a cold, on top of my lungs still trying to un-drown themselves. Pneumonia really knocks the shit outta you for a while, doesn’t it? Also, Troll Baby is battling the same cold and this morning, Dylan decided to join us in Snot-Fest 2006. Excellent.

Moving right along: some of you (especially those who use a feed reader) might have noticed the mini-blog I’ve got going in the sidebar. I started that because I often find funny little things that don’t require a hugely long and boring blog entry and so there it is. I try to add at least one a day, and the list in the sidebar is set to display 5 items. Have fun.

On to Love Thursday:

Last Sunday night, I had decided to make soft tacos because we’d been out nearly all day. Daren was having a snooze on the couch, and the kids were playing with each other. I stuck my head into the fridge to get the ingredients I needed and gathered everything in my arms. As I popped up, shutting the fridge door with my foot, there was my nearly 8 year old, Dylan.

“Can I help you make dinner, Mama?”

I was a little surprised, but welcomed the opportunity. I let him put the ground beef in the pan, and break it up with a spoon, I taught him how to cut a tomato and the green onions, and he grated cheese. Though my heart was in my throat as he wielded the knife, he didn’t cut off any fingers. I watched him carefully and thought about how proud I am of him. His grades are wonderful, his teacher says he is reading at a Grade 7 level, and he was just asked by a competitive hockey team to join them as an alternate. I thought about how well-rounded he has become and I couldn’t help but kiss him on the head as he worked diligently at the tomatoes.

“This is fun, Mom. Can we do this more often?”

“Of couse we can, sweetheart. Of course we can.”

Aw, what a sweetheart of a helper. Enjoy these times–the sons grow up too soon.

I came over from Chookooloonks, but I seem to remember seeing your name in Comments at Dooce back in the day.

It seems I’ll have to do some catching up.

Dylan is such a blessing for you.

Thanks to your post, I remembered to let my 5 yo help me make lunch today, she had a blast. It’s so much easier to do it without “help” that I forget how wonderful it can be when they do :)

How wonderful. Kudos to you for saying yes, even though it meant using a sharp knife. Sounds like he was ready for it!

Hey, why are ads showing up in your feeds but not here?

Karen, that is really sweet. It’s so touching when they are truly interested in helping and learning.

Hey maybe Dylan can come teach me a thing or two in the kitchen! I’m guessing by the time he’s 9, he’ll have surpassed my cooking abilities! Hhahaha!
