We’re Home!
February 13, 2007
Dylan and I went to the hospital this evening, (I had to wake him up to go, poor kid.) When we got there, he still had the fever, so they gave him a dose of Tylenol, and we were seen pretty quickly because it wasn’t busy.
I’m relieved he is okay, but let me just vent for a second.
Dear Dr. We Saw on Sunday,
If there is no added risk to MY Kawasaki Kid for developing Endocarditis, DO NOT EXPLAIN ENDOCARDITIS TO ME. No wonder no one ever told me about Endo in the last 8 years - his chart clearly shows no valve transplants, no sign that he would have any more risk than any other 8 year old.
Thanks.
Had I only known. I feel like the world’s biggest drama queen right now. And I’m not much of a drama queen. Maybe a little, but not about my child’s health. Come on, David. You may have made me feel like a fool this afternoon, but thanks to my homegirls for empowering this Mama Bear once again.
So, the doctor we saw tonight checked and double checked Dylan’s cardiology records, and consulted briefly with Dylan’s Cardiologist. All is well. Dylan has a virus and it’s just been flirting with him a little aggressively.
Since I gotta find some good out of all this, here’s some great points from the last few days:
- We read tons of Nanny McPhee together;
- We watched “Dirty Jobs” last night and laughed our asses off;
- Dylan got to ride in a wheelchair down a HUGE hill, while I slid behind him, clutching the handles of the wheelchair for dear life. I felt like a VERY SCARED ESKIMO. It was cool. and frightening.
So despite all the crappy stuff, he is indeed on the mend, and I can rest easy that it isn’t something serious.
Thank you thank you thank you all for being here through this. I know I haven’t “met” you all in person, but you are all amazing and I value your kindness greatly.
xo

WHEW! I was just catching up on the last few days and that was an intense ten minutes for me. I’m so sorry you had to go through that for days. Stupid doctors! Stupid fevers!
February 13th, 2007 at 7:30 pm
So glad to hear (read?) the news.
Enjoy your time together.

Well now I wanna smack David AND the doc you saw Sunday!! So glad Dylan IS on the mend & that you can all rest easier! You’re SO not a drama queen Karen! You reacted based on the information you had available at the time and based on your child being unwell - sounds like most commenters would’ve reacted the same! I know how much I panic when my kiddo spikes a fever (he’s prone to febrile convulsions)… anyways …. the point is RELIEF! aaaaahhhhh!!!
February 13th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
You know, sometimes doctors just say way too much. Glad everything’s okay!
February 13th, 2007 at 8:06 pm
When it comes to our kids (no matter how old they are), and they are in danger (big or small), we are ALL drama queens. We HAVE to be, it’s in our genes. We are the protectors. It’s what we do best.
I’m glad that Dylan is going to be okay.
And you might want to tell him that I finally quit smoking. And it was because of him. He made me see something through his eyes what it was like (the fear) of knowing that you smoked and that he might lose YOU. I didn’t get it when my grandson said the same thing. I don’t know why. But, I’m smoke free and unfortunately, food is tasting really good these days!
Take care.

HUGE sigh of relief!!!!!
Like we need extra stress to age us!!
So glad to hear the news.
February 13th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
So happy to read this update! Hang in there Karen!
On a frivolous note, Dirty Jobs rocks.
February 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm
Karen,
THANK GOODNESS!!! I am so glad to hear Dylan is okay! Don’t feel like a drama queen. Any mom would have been terrified under the circumstances. You did a great job and I’m glad you had us to vent to and turn to for extra support. WHEW! ***Doing a happy dance just for you guys**
February 13th, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Wow. I haven’t been around in the last few days. I am so sorry that you’ve been going through this, and I am SO glad that things are on the up and up!
You’re in my thoughts! I hope Dylan is back to his old self REAL soon!
February 13th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Karen, I’m so glad Dylan is doing better. It’s so scary when doctor’s throw more information than you really need to know. Had I listened to my daughter’s doctor 10 years ago then I would have fed into the garbage about her being mentally retarded and having cerebral palsy.
She’s healthy as can be, on the honor roll and started karate last week.
Hugs to Dylan!

YOu are NOT a drama queen, you were given misleading information that would freak anyone out! And the unmentionable one is still a knob.
So so so happy to hear that it is just that nasty virus.
February 13th, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Phew. I can breathe a huge sigh of relief now — seriously, you guys have been in my thoughts all night.
This is the best news I’ve heard all day.
February 13th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
So happy to hear that he is home and you have some good news.
We love us some dirty jobs over here too. Did you see the one where they artificially inseminated the horses. That one cracked me up. Latex horse vagina! How can that not be funny.
(((hugs)))

A lot of Chrises read this blog.

Hallelujah! I’ve been wondering about him all day. Glad he’s okay!
February 14th, 2007 at 12:23 am

rock on!
February 14th, 2007 at 12:38 am
SUCH a relief. Yay.
February 14th, 2007 at 1:30 am
YES.
Oh, that good news. I needed that.
I’m mean, not as much as you….but it is a very big relief.
February 14th, 2007 at 4:16 am
I’m so glad it’s only a virus. Though it seems to be a tough one. Hugs to all of you and I hope Dylan will be better soon.
February 14th, 2007 at 8:55 am
It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to our babies, I say. I’m glad that Dylan is ok.
February 14th, 2007 at 9:32 am
He’s home today - he is no longer feverish, but he was last night so I thought keeping up out of the snowstorm would be a good idea!
Thanks again everyone - you are all awesome.
February 14th, 2007 at 9:39 am
It’s such a relief to hear it was just a regular fever, you had me scared for a moment too!
I’m glad he’s feeling better though. Wheelchair rides down hills are always fun, unless your pushed and fall out of it. That wasn’t to fun.
I love you guys and I miss you!
By the way Karen, I’m loving the new look!!
February 14th, 2007 at 10:08 am
Hi Karen, I just wanted to stop by today and say Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope Dylan is over the fever for good.

Very happy to hear that he is OK. I don’t think you played the drama queen at all. Fevers unaccompanied by other symptoms are scary. And that’s even without the heart condition.
I don’t blame the first doc for taking a better safe than sorry approach, although he certainly should have consulted Dylan’s cardiologist.
February 14th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
I am so releived! If anyone thinks you are a drama queen for reacting the way you did, then they either don’t have any kids, or don’t know how to love someone that much. I completely understand, and have been known to freak the fuck out over stuff with my son and then feel like an ass after it’s over. It IS scary when things happen, and I’m glad you shared with us!
February 14th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
There is never too much drama when it comes to one’s babies. I’ll turn into some kind of raging lunatic to protect mine, and I would certainly never fault another mom for doing the same.
Oh, and in my experience anyone named David is a total asshat.
February 14th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
I am so glad!!!! Better to over react that to leave it alone and something really bad happen.
Give him a big hug from me and one for yourself!!!
Muahhhhhhhhhhh
February 14th, 2007 at 3:48 pm
so glad he’s doing OK! I am so sorry I wasn’t around to support you. (((huggs))) and a kiss for both of you (or a high five if he’s not kissing now!).
We have to do a test for a UTI with all of LG’s fevers, as she has reflux, and it could damage her kidneys. Fevers can be benign, but they can also be wretched. I’m so glad it all worked out well.
February 14th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
Thank goodness he is home and on the mend.
February 14th, 2007 at 11:53 pm
Soooooooo GLAD!
YAY!
Dumbass doctors.
Did I ever tell you that when daughter was a toddler, she developed some weird virus, broke out in sores all over her lips and wouldn’t wake up properly so I brought her to emerg … the doc there said Kawasaki’s and arranged for a followup appt in the morning. I went home and googled it and shit my pants.
Obviously, he was wrong.
You are a strong woman.
As is Dylan.
(PS - Competition coming up, but I still don’t know what’s going on. I’ve tucked away your number though. *smooch*)
February 15th, 2007 at 4:15 pm
I’m catching up … and whether or not this was as fatal as it seemed, I’m still flabbergasted by the one that wrote to express it was “just” a fever.
Good.Lord.
There are some people who need a straightjacket so they can’t key.

I lurves me teh Dirty Jobs.
Mike Rowe is hilarious.
