TRUE: I asked my doctor for a hysterectomy at age 18.
June 14, 2007
Even before I had a serious relationship, I did not want kids. My mother was the only example of how I might be as a mother, and I didn’t want that for any child. At age 18, I asked my doctor how old I would have to be to make my choice permanent. She convinced me to wait until I was 25, and that if I still felt that way, to come back.
Obviously I didn’t.
Otherwise I wouldn’t shed tears every time I heard this song. I sing it to the boys all the time now. It makes me think about how hard it will be to let them go eventually. I know that is a long time from now, but time really does fly when you’re having fun, raising children, living life.
(I can’t find the original video, if one exists, so this one will have to do.)
Boats And Birds
Artist: Gregory And The Hawk
If you be my star
I’ll be your sky
you can hide underneath me and come out at night
when I turn jet black and you show off your light
I live to let you shine
I live to let you shine
but you can skyrocket away from me
and never come back if you find another galaxy
far from here with more room to fly
just leave me your stardust to remember you by
if you be my boat
I’ll be your sea
a depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity
ebbing and flowing and pushed by a breeze
I live to make you free
I live to make you free
but you can set sail to the west if you want to
and past the horizon till I can’t even see you
far from here where the beaches are wide
just leave me your wake to remember you by
if you be my star
I’ll be your sky
you can hide underneath me and come out at night
when I turn jet black and you show off your light
I live to let you shine
I live to let you shine
but you can skyrocket away from me
and never come back if you find another galaxy
far from here with more room to fly
just leave me your stardust to remember you by
stardust to remember you by

It’s not nice to make a person cry during their first cup of coffee
That song is wonderful and touching.
I’m so glad the Doc made you wait a while

I agree with the previous commenters… what a beautiful song. It made me, too, weepy, and I’m not even a mom!
Have a happy Thursday!

Wow. Love that song!
And I’m 2 for 2! Go me!

I’m not going to read the song, because I can’t cry at work.
I can’t believe they would have don’t it at 25 though. My friend has asked to have her tubes tied many times and they keep telling her that she has to either be 30 or have at least one kid before they’d even consider it.

That us a beautiful song. A bit too slow for me, but reading the lyrics made me teary. Now I miss my dad..
Thanks for sharing that. = )
And Phoenix is right, though it may be different where you are. One of my friends wanted a hysterectomy too and they told her she has to be at least thirty. I’m assuming it’s because having that procedure causes early menopause.

I relate to this totally. I have three kids, ages 11,5,3 and when I was scared to death and pregnant with the first one, I cried to my niece and said, “When have you ever heard me say, I must procreate??” I love your blog, very funny!
