Muffintop Update
April 17, 2008
There are 24 days until the big marathon! I’m running about 6K at a time and tonight I ran about 35 minutes with minimal stops. It helped that Homie G was dragging me by my hair motivating me to keep running. Before we went running tonight, I attended her Core class which was a series of stations of different abs, obliques, butt, and glute exercises.
At the end of the class, Homie G and I had planned to run anyway so we downed a couple of homemade muffins I made today and went. I told her the class was too easy for me (!!!!) and that I wouldn’t go back. She was okay with that - she has just changed up my weight training routine (which is more intense) and I LOVE it. I can feel it working.
Before we started the new routine (2 weeks ago now), we took measurements. Unfortunately, I’ve lost the sheet of paper with the frigging target areas and where I’ve lost but the 1st round of measurements, you might remember, I had lost 5 inches. (a month ago)
Well add another 4 inches lost! Yay! I know that my waist went down 4 inches total since I started, but I cant remember the rest. That 4 inches measurement session was two weeks ago and I keep forgetting to blog it. Whoops.
The crappy thing that I’m trying not to worry about is that I lost 7 pounds, then gained back 5 (muscle maybe?) and just lost 6 again (in a week), for a total loss of 8 pounds. That isn’t very much even when you factor muscle weighing more than fat. So tomorrow I’m heading to the doctor to have my thyroid checked and see what else could be wrong. Because guys? I’m working my ass off here. It’s frustrating! I can see the difference in my clothes and my face and stuff but the scale is making me mental!
I have a food diary I maintain through Sparkpeople and when Homie G reviewed it 2 weeks ago, she thought I wasn’t eating enough. Especially on run days. She thinks I should be at 1100-1300 calories on weight training days and up to 2000 calories on running days. That REALLY freaks me out. That is so much food I can’t even fathom it. I struggle to get to 1200 calories every day. I’m just not hungry. I guess the confusing thing for my body is that I starved it for so long, it’s confused. So I’m trying to eat something healthy every 3 hours.
Thankfully, I’ve found some new people on Twitter (add me!) and some blogs that talk about fitness, running, weight loss and nutrition. Enjoy:

We’ll see what the doctor says. I’m sure it’ll be more than a week before I get any tests back. Still, 9 inches and 8 pounds isn’t anything to sneeze at. It’s just taking SO long!

You are awesome! Keep it up! You might just inspire me to start running. Right now I’m doing classes at the gym 3-4 times per week. Great job on the loss!!

GET OFF THE SCALE.
There, I said it.
You can do like I did and just throw it away, but don’t do what I did and pick up the weight everyone else is losing.
Yea, that’s not good.
I’m so excited for you - a marathon. DANGIT woman! Okay, I’m convinced…I think I might go walk around the block!

Goodness, if I eat too much Mexican food in one sitting I can gain 5 lbs. I’m sure it’s the muscle gain/water loss, but I hope your tests are normal!
Keep up the running. It is inspiring.

You are not eating enough! There, I agree with your trainer. And you’re probably not eating enough protein, either.
That said, I was losing 10# in 6 weeks then not losing anything for 2-3 months. Then down again. I STILL need to lose some fat and build more muscle mass. Yep, I still have the muffin top. I obsess about fat and lean muscle mass and it sounds like you’re doing fine there.
Don’t obsess about the number of the scale.
I think it’s MizFit (you missed her link and she is fabulous! mizfitonline.com) suggests you use one piece of clothing: a t-shirt or jeans or a dress and judge how it fits you once a week. Keep the scales for the trainers and don’t sweat the numbers.
You are going to be one of the hottest babes at BlogHer! You are coming, right?

These links look awesome! I can’t wait to check them out. Even though you’re frustrated, to me, your progress is fantastic and inspiring. Remember it’s about how you feel more than what the scale says. Good luck with your appointment today.

You are doing so freaking awesome it’s scary.
And, just for comparison, I can eat 2000 calories before lunchtime (and keep going), so yeah, maybe you could eat a little more. Gotta keep those strong bones and stuff, ya know.

It ALWAYS takes longer the “right” way.
At least, that’s what I hear from people who do it that way.
I can’t believe it’s only 24 days to the Big Run. Sooooo amazed at you.

You’d be surprised the difference between fat versus muscles. Not to mention, some times the working out will cause little weight gain because of muscle build up before weight loss.
But, I agree with what’s already been said, get off the scale! You’ve lost alot of inches and I’d be looking at that quicker than the numbers on the scales.
Yeah for you. Keep up the hard work, sounds like you’re doing great.

You are doing great, Karen! I had the same experience last year when I saw a trainer. Lost lots of inches, and my BMI went way down, but the scale actually only changed by a few pounds which was disheartening because I was killing myself 5 days a week! In the end, I got depressed and gave up and I really shoudn’t have. My body took a completely different shape adn the results were visible even if they didn’t show on the scale. Now, I’m trying to get back to that.
Thanks SO MUCH for all the great links! Be sure to tell us what you find out at the Dr. today!

Please dont tie yourself to that scale! If you’re seeing and feeling the changes in your body you are doing something right!
I just lost 9 pounds after a 6 week workout program…that number was not as high as I thought it would be…but after doing my measurements..I had lost 23 1/2 INCHES!! OH MY!!
Check out my blog, there is tons of info there for your fitness journey. And if you’re needing any advice on what your caloric intake should be you can email me and I can help you with that.

Also..I wanted to add that if you’re not eating AT LEAST 1200 cals/day your body WILL go into starvation mode. At this point your body will hold onto every bit of fat to “survive”. Remember this! Make sure you’re always about that mark!

You’re doing so amazingly well! If I didn’t love you I’d be insanely jealous.
And remember that water weight can fluctuate several pounds between days. Eating something too salty can lead to a change of 1-3 pounds, sometimes more.

Hi Karen - Thanks for the link! I haven’t seen your blog before, so I’m just getting acclimated, but I’m really enjoying your writing style and your experience. I’m just getting back into running myself, so its really great to read about others who are doing so well. maybe we can get some cross-inspiration going.
Thanks again and looking forward to reading more (I just subscribed),
