KARACHI – The Federal Investigation Agency on Thursday arrested a major sugar market broker implicated in an artificial rise in sugar prices. The Anti-Corruption Circle of the first investigative body apprehended Haji Zameer Ahmed, owner of Master Corporation, according to the agency spokesperson.

The accused was said to have been an active member of the WhatsApp group “Sugar Merchant”.

He, along with the owners of sugar factories in Punjab, Sindh and other brokers, used to create an artificial rise in the price of sugar. One case was registered and further investigation was underway.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Thursday filed a lawsuit against companies involved in issuing bogus sales tax invoices and other tax fraud and arrested three defendants involved.

The FIA’s Corporate Crime Circle Karachi registered the case under the direction of the Public Accounts Committee, according to the agency spokesperson. These companies have caused losses of over 380 million rupees to the public treasury.

The arrested defendants have been identified as Siraj-ul-Haq, Syed Ali Furqan Zaidi and Muhammad Saleem. Further investigations were in progress.
